Destiny 2 New Player Guide: What to Play, Buy and Skip

Destiny 2 throws more menus, currencies, and acronyms at you than almost any shooter.

Most new players hit that wall in the first hour.

This Destiny 2 new player guide cuts it down to what matters: which class to play, what’s free, which campaigns are worth your money, and how gear works after Bungie’s final update.

Read it once and you can start playing today.

Table of Contents

Is Destiny 2 worth playing as a new player?

Yes.

Destiny 2 still has some of the best gunplay and movement in any shooter, and a large share of the game is free. Not sure the game is alive? See is Destiny 2 dead? and is it worth starting now?. Coming back after a break? Read the returning player guide.

The catch is that it drops a lot of systems on you at once, which is what the rest of this guide sorts out.

We’ve put a lot of hours into Destiny 2, and it’s one of the most fun and memorable games we’ve played.

The shooting feels great, the movement tech is fun, and the PvE content gets properly hard.

All of it sits on a bright sci-fi backdrop.

Take it one layer at a time.

You don’t need to understand every system to enjoy the first twenty hours.

Where Destiny 2 stands in late 2026

Monument of Triumph (Update 9.7.0, June 9, 2026) was Destiny 2’s final live-service content update.

Bungie’s FAQ says the game stays playable, with no more planned seasonal content.

For a new player that’s mostly good news: the game is a fixed set of content, so nothing you play goes out of date next season.

The final update also changed how the game works, and older guides get these points wrong:

  • The Director is back as the main navigation hub. Portal Ops still exists, but it’s no longer the focus.
  • The power cap stays at 550. Monument of Triumph didn’t raise it.
  • Most bounties were removed, except destination and clan bounties. Vendor reputation now comes from playing activities.
  • Legendary Shards and planetary materials were retired, and you don’t need them for infusion.
  • A new Monument in the Tower turns Triumphs into Legendary Marks, which you spend with four vendors.

If a guide tells you to farm Legendary Shards or grind bounties, it’s out of date.

Update, October 29, 2026:

On September 21, 2026, Bungie said it will bring back its vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids for all players (Game Developer’s coverage).

In its October 29 community update, Bungie named the first phase: the Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken campaigns, plus their strikes, raids, and the Menagerie.

Bungie says the first pass will be free for every Destiny 2 player.

There is no release date, and none of it is playable yet.

Bungie expects pre-production to run until early 2027, then about 12 more months of full production. For the details, see our Destiny 2 unvaulting guide.

The first content is expected no earlier than early 2028, so don’t wait for it.

We’ll update this guide when it ships.

Install and set up: platforms, Bungie account and cross save

Destiny 2 is free to download on PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X|S and One, Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store.

You create a free Bungie account the first time you log in.

Bungie’s new player guide notes that paid content unlocks inside the installed game, so you don’t re-download anything when you buy an expansion.

Your account gets a Bungie Name that looks like PlayerName#1234.

You can change the display name, but the number is fixed.

Cross save lets one Destiny account follow you across platforms, which matters if you start on one and switch later.

Choose your looks with one rule in mind.

You pick Human, Awoken, or Exo at character creation, and that choice is permanent unless you delete the character.

It’s cosmetic only.

Face, hair, and markings can change any time.

Which class should you play?

Hunter, Titan, or Warlock.

All three can do every activity in the game, so pick the one whose fantasy you like most.

Your account has three character slots, so you can try another class later.

Class Fantasy Playstyle Iconic super
Hunter Agile, gunslinging space rogue Mobility and stealth, plus flashy high-damage supers Golden Gun
Titan Fearless frontline warrior Close combat, shielding allies, lots of melee builds Thundercrash
Warlock Space-magic scholar Ability-heavy builds, healing and team support Well of Radiance

Hunters get a straightforward jump, cape-heavy fashion, and plenty of damage-focused builds.

Titans get chunky armor and a protector’s toolkit.

Warlocks wear flowing robes, and their Well of Radiance drops a flaming circle on the floor that gives everyone inside repeated healing and a weapon damage buff.

Which class should you play

That’s why it shows up in so many raid and dungeon boss fights.

Don’t treat these as locked roles.

Every class can build for damage, melee, or support.

The class sets how you move and which abilities you start with.

One more thing to know: the community teases all three.

Titans are crayon eaters, Warlocks are bookworms, and Hunters wear nothing but black.

Now you can join in.

Subclasses, aspects and fragments

Each class has six subclasses, one per element: Solar, Arc, Void, Stasis, Strand, and Prismatic.

You can swap between the ones you own whenever you like, so you’re never locked in.

Your first three arrive early in the game.

Subclass How you get it Free?
Solar, Arc, Void Unlock early; buy aspects and fragments from Ikora Rey in the Tower with Glimmer Yes
Stasis Finish the Beyond Light campaign on Europa; aspects and fragments from the Exo Stranger Yes
Strand Progress through the Lightfall campaign on Neomuna Needs Lightfall
Prismatic Progress through The Final Shape in the Pale Heart Needs The Final Shape

Aspects are the main way to customize a subclass.

You equip two, and each one is specific to your class.

Warlocks, for example, can take the Icarus Dash aspect for a mid-air dash, and no other class can.

Fragments work differently.

They’re the same for every class and tied to an element.

Ember of Ashes, for instance, is a Solar fragment that boosts scorch damage.

Scorch is a burn that damages enemies over time.

Start with Solar, Arc, or Void and learn one subclass well.

Subclasses, aspects and fragments in Destiny 2

Prismatic can wait.

What’s free in Destiny 2 and what’s worth buying

You can play a lot of Destiny 2 for free: the New Light quest, four subclasses, every destination, two full campaigns, three raids, and a dungeon.

Paid content adds the newer campaigns, the other raids and dungeons, and the Strand and Prismatic subclasses.

Content Free? Notes
New Light quest Free Short intro mission chain
Arc, Solar, Void, Stasis Free Stasis comes from the Beyond Light campaign
Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaigns Free Their raids and dungeons are in paid packs
Witch Queen, Lightfall, Final Shape, Edge of Fate, Renegades First mission free, rest paid The first Witch Queen mission unlocks weapon crafting
Vault of Glass, King’s Fall, Crota’s End raids Free Six-player raids
Prophecy dungeon Free Three-player dungeon
Pantheon Free Permanent raid boss gauntlet
Crucible, Gambit, Vanguard Ops, Dares of Eternity Free Trials of Osiris is excluded
Strand, Prismatic Paid Need Lightfall and The Final Shape

The paid side is simple now.

Destiny 2: The Collection bundles every expansion, content pack, and dungeon key into one purchase.

The regular price is about $70 (USD), and it has dropped as low as roughly $14 to $21 in past sales (checked November 2026), so check your store before buying.

It’s also discounted based on the DLC you already own.

The bundle skips the Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaigns because they’re free.

It does include the Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, Forsaken, and 30th Anniversary packs, which hold the raids, dungeons, and exotics from those eras.

A separate Dungeon Key covers every dungeon that isn’t already free.

Our suggestion: play the free content first.

If it hooks you, buy the Collection on sale.

If you want just one paid campaign, make it The Final Shape.

What’s free in Destiny 2 and what’s worth buying

Which campaigns to play, and in what order

Play them in release order: New Light, Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate, then Renegades.

The first two are free.

You can skip around, but the main story builds toward The Final Shape.

Campaign Cost Set on Our take
New Light Free Cosmodrome Short intro; teaches the basics
Shadowkeep Free The Moon Free story; the paid pack adds the Garden of Salvation raid and Pit of Heresy dungeon
Beyond Light Free Europa Unlocks Stasis; the paid pack adds the Deep Stone Crypt raid
The Witch Queen Paid Savathun’s Throne World One of the best campaigns; adds the Vow of the Disciple raid
Lightfall Paid Neptune (Neomuna) Our least favorite, but you need it for Strand; adds Root of Nightmares
The Final Shape Paid The Pale Heart The strongest story; ends the Light and Darkness saga; adds Salvation’s Edge
The Edge of Fate Paid Kepler Slow start; sets up a saga that ended early; adds the Desert Perpetual raid
Renegades Paid Lawless Frontier Star Wars crossover; adds the Equilibrium dungeon

The Final Shape closes the story that began in 2013.

If you try the free route and enjoy it, we’d push you to reach this campaign.

The Edge of Fate and Renegades come after that story ends, so treat them as extras.

Vaulted content and how to catch up on the story

The Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken campaigns aren’t in the game right now.

Bungie removed them, along with older raids and destinations, through its Destiny Content Vault. Our vaulted content list shows everything that left, year by year.

See the October 29 update above for Bungie’s plan to restore them.

You can still catch up on what happened.

Our Red War recap covers that story in full, spoilers included. The in-game timeline recaps the major events.

Lore channels on YouTube, such as My Name Is Byf, cover the whole saga.

Wikis fill in the rest.

Vaulted content and how to catch up on the story

Should you play the New Light campaign?

Yes, if you’re brand new.

It’s short, and it gives you hands-on time with your abilities, a first look at the enemies, and lore about important characters.

It also walks you through your first subclass unlocks with Ikora Rey.

We tried it on a brand-new account.

It doesn’t teach how the game’s deeper systems work, but it makes a fun, welcoming introduction.

Partway through, the game offers a way to skip the rest and go straight to the Tower.

Skip it if you’re in a rush.

Otherwise, finish it.

After that, head to the Tower, the main social hub, and follow the quest markers.

Weapons: ammo, rarity, exotics, rolls and tiers

Weapons come in three ammo types: primary ammo never runs out, special ammo is limited, and heavy ammo is limited and hits hardest.

Rarity runs from white to gold, and gold exotics are unique by design.

Perk rolls and gear tiers decide how good a legendary weapon is.

Ammo Icon color Slots Weapon types
Primary White Kinetic or energy Hand cannon, auto rifle, scout rifle, pulse rifle, sidearm, SMG, bow
Special Green Kinetic or energy Shotgun, sniper rifle, fusion rifle, trace rifle, glaive, breech grenade launcher
Heavy Purple Power Rocket launcher, machine gun, sword, linear fusion rifle

Source: Bungie’s older new and returning player guide.

A few exotics break these rules.

Special and heavy ammo drop as bricks from kills.

Watch the ammo generation bars at the bottom left of your HUD, below your weapons and abilities.

When a bar nears full, your next kill drops a brick.

Your armor’s Weapons stat controls how fast those bars fill, per Bungie’s FAQ.

Use heavy ammo on bosses and dangerous enemies.

Saving it forever is a common beginner mistake.

Primary weapons are the weakest option, so don’t run two primaries unless you’re playing it safe.

Weapons: ammo, rarity, exotics, rolls and tiers

Exotics

You can equip only one exotic weapon and one exotic armor piece at a time.

White, green, blue, and purple rocket launchers all work the same way: you pull the trigger and a rocket goes boom.

Exotic launchers don’t.

The Wardcliff Coil, for example, fires a barrage of micro-missiles.

Exotics come from random drops, exotic missions, and quests.

Collecting them and finding the ones you like is part of the fun.

Monument of Triumph added 25 new exotic catalysts, according to Bungie’s dev insights.

Perk rolls and god rolls

Most legendary weapons drop with random perks.

Each weapon type has its own perk pool, so cluster bombs can roll on a rocket launcher but not on a hand cannon.

Players call the best perk combination a god roll, and veterans often disagree on what that is.

Check a weapon’s possible perks and rolls on light.gg.

Don’t dismantle a good roll just because the tier is low.

Gear tiers

Legendary weapons carry a tier from 1 to 5, shown on the icon.

A higher tier doesn’t add base damage.

It gives you more and better perk options, plus more mod options.

You can now raise a weapon’s tier.

Monument of Triumph added Weapon Tier Upgrading, which lets you pay a cost to raise a weapon’s gear tier and unlock additional enhanced perks, including on weapons already in your vault.

Crafted weapons can also be upgraded.

Armor: stats, tiers and set bonuses

Armor has six stats: Health, Melee, Grenade, Super, Class, and Weapons.

Each stat goes up to 200 and has two benefits.

One is always active, and a stronger one switches on past 100.

Stat Up to 100 101 to 200
Health More health from Orbs of Power Faster shield recharge and bonus shield health
Melee Shorter melee cooldown More melee damage
Grenade Shorter grenade cooldown More grenade damage
Super More super energy from damaging targets and other sources More super damage
Class Shorter class ability cooldown Overshield when you use your class ability
Weapons Faster reload and handling, more damage to minor and major enemies Chance of extra ammo from bricks, more damage to bosses and guardians

Hover over each stat icon on your character screen to read what it does.

Source for the stat effects: Sportskeeda’s Edge of Fate stat breakdown.

Orbs of Power are small orbs that heal you and add super energy.

Don’t try to max all six stats.

Pick two or three priorities.

Health first is a safe call because a dead Guardian deals no damage.

After that, Weapons and Super are solid bets, since extra boss damage from your gun or your super always helps your team.

Armor also has tiers from 1 to 5, and you want Tier 5.

Unlike weapons, higher-tier armor generally carries more stat points.

Each piece has an archetype that decides where those points go.

Set bonuses

Armor pieces belong to sets.

Wear two pieces from one set for a 2-piece bonus, or four pieces for the 2-piece and 4-piece bonuses together.

The Ferropotent set is one example: its 2-piece bonus is Rapid Repair, which gives you flinch and damage resistance when your shields start recharging.

More pieces isn’t always better.

Some 2-piece bonuses beat some 4-piece bonuses.

As a new player, just play and worry about set bonuses once you reach endgame.

Exotic armor

Exotic armor changes how an ability or subclass works.

The Celestial Nighthawk helmet, for example, turns the Hunter’s Golden Gun from three shots into one very high-damage shot.

You can wear only one exotic armor piece at a time, so pick the one that fits your build.

Power level, infusion and gear tiers

Power level is the average of your equipped gear’s power.

You start at 10, and loot drops at 300 or higher, so you reach about 300 after a few activities.

The hard cap is 550, according to Bungie’s FAQ.

Around 440, regular drops stop pushing you higher.

Climb in two steps:

  1. Follow your Guardian Rank checklist first, then play Vanguard Ops, Crucible, or Gambit until you hit about 440. Any activity gives better gear than you have.
  2. Chase pinnacle rewards. Past 440, you need pinnacle rewards from harder activities, such as grandmaster Nightfalls and raids, to push toward 550.

Activities list a recommended power level.

Going in far below it makes for a rough time.

Power and gear tier are different things.

Power sets how well you handle an activity’s difficulty.

Tier sets the perk and mod options on the gear.

Harder difficulty drops higher-tier loot.

Infusion saves gear you like.

If you have a favorite weapon with a lower power level, infuse a higher-power item of the same slot into it, and the favorite takes on the higher power.

It costs a few resources, and it works for both weapons and armor.

Don’t dismantle gear blindly.

Check the perks first.

The Director, the Portal and Guardian Ranks

The Director is your map of destinations and activities.

The Portal is a menu of activities (ops) that you reach through it.

You’ll see solo ops, fireteam ops for up to three players, arena ops for up to six, pinnacle ops that are harder, and Crucible and Gambit ops.

Portal activities let you set a difficulty, and harder difficulty gives better rewards.

Don’t pick the hardest option at the start.

A clean run at a level you can handle teaches you more.

Guardian Ranks are your built-in learning path.

Each rank gives you a list of objectives that teach a system.

Higher ranks unlock features, including loadouts and mods, per Bungie’s FAQ.

Loadouts and armor mods are the practical unlocks to aim for early.

Past that, ranks mostly show other players you know the game.

Loadouts let you save a build and swap to it fast.

Make separate loadouts for general PvE, boss damage, and PvP once you start building.

Champions, artifacts and elemental keywords

Champions are tough enemies that need to be stunned.

There are three types: Barrier, Overload, and Unstoppable.

Champion What it does Weapons that counter it
Barrier Puts up a shield that blocks damage Precision and Adaptive frame weapons
Overload Keeps regenerating its health Lightweight and Rapid-Fire frame weapons
Unstoppable Walks at you and takes much less damage Aggressive and High Impact frame weapons

Monument of Triumph built anti-Champion effects into the weapons themselves, based on the weapon’s frame.

Simply firing the weapon applies the effect, so you no longer need a specific weapon for each Champion type.

Some exotics and special frames differ, so check the weapon’s description.

A stunned champion is your window to kill it.

Artifacts are a second layer of customization.

Bungie gave the community seven artifacts, and you can use whichever one you want, whenever you want.

Each has a set of perks, and Monument of Triumph added support for saved artifact setups in loadouts.

Elemental keywords are the highlighted words in perk and ability descriptions.

Open your subclass menu and hover over an aspect or fragment, and the game explains the keyword.

Every element has its own keywords, and none of them are hard to learn.

Focusing, attunement and crafting

Loot in Destiny 2 is random, but you have three tools to tilt it: attunement, focusing, and crafting.

Together they take much of the luck out of chasing the exact weapon you want.

Focusing, attunement and crafting

Attunement is in your inventory, and you can open it anywhere, any time.

You can be attuned to one weapon per activity type at no cost, with no limit on switching.

Focusing lets you buy the exact item you want.

Focusing for tiered gear is now available at many vendors across the Tower.

That means you can target a specific weapon or armor piece instead of hoping for a drop.

Crafting happens at the crafting table in the Enclave in Savathun’s Throne World.

The first Witch Queen mission is free and gets you there.

Weapons with a red border are Deepsight weapons: extract their pattern progress, and once a weapon’s pattern is complete, you can craft it with the perks you choose.

Not every weapon is craftable, and crafted weapons still have limited perk pools.

They can also be upgraded.

Tools and finding a team

Destiny 2 doesn’t organize everything for you.

A few third-party tools make it much easier:

  • Destiny Item Manager (DIM) shows your whole vault and lets you move items between characters.
  • The official Destiny Companion app continues to work after the final update, per Bungie’s FAQ.
  • light.gg lists every weapon and its possible perk rolls.

For teammates, use Fireteam Finder, Destiny 2’s built-in group finder, which you reach from the roster screen.

Browse listings for a dungeon, a raid, or almost anything, or post your own.

Matchmaking is off in raids and dungeons, so this is how most people find a team.

Say you’re learning, and look for groups marked for newer players.

Endgame: what to aim for

Endgame in Destiny 2 means raids, dungeons, and the challenges you set yourself.

Raids are six-player activities built around puzzle mechanics and big boss fights.

Dungeons are the three-player version: shorter, and easier to approach.

The free options are the Vault of Glass, King’s Fall, and Crota’s End raids, and the Prophecy dungeon.

Every other dungeon needs a dungeon key, and Equilibrium comes with Renegades.

We recommend trying at least one raid.

It’s some of Destiny’s best content, especially the first time.

Endgame: what to aim for

If you want more of a challenge, try these:

  • Solo flawless dungeons. Beat a dungeon alone without dying and you earn an emblem. It’s a fun way to test your best builds.
  • Pantheon. This permanent, free activity is a gauntlet of raid bosses. You can turn on optional Feats in Custom difficulty to raise the challenge, and clearing the Insurrection Prime Revolutionary Pantheon with all five Feats active earns the Hall of the Gods emblem.
  • Low-man raiding. Beat raids with fewer than six players.
  • Speedruns. Beat dungeons and raids as fast as you can.

Crucible, the PvP mode, is free and has great-feeling movement and gunplay.

In our experience the player pool is smaller than it once was, and cheating is a recurring annoyance.

Trials of Osiris needs The Edge of Fate, Renegades, or The Collection, plus SMS verification on your account.

There’s also fashion.

Destiny has a wild range of sci-fi armor looks, and Monument of Triumph added true exotic armor transmog for PvE.

Plenty of players spend hours on their look alone.

Key Takeaways

  • Pick the class that sounds most fun. All three can do everything.
  • Play the free content first: the New Light quest, Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, three raids, and a dungeon.
  • Buy The Collection only on sale, and only if you’re hooked.
  • Max power is 550. Aim for 440, then chase pinnacle rewards.
  • Choose two or three armor stats. Health first is a safe start.
  • Use light.gg, DIM, and Fireteam Finder.
  • Vaulted campaigns are gone for now. Bungie says they’re coming back.

FAQ

Is Destiny 2 free to play?

Yes.

The base game is free, and it includes the New Light quest, four subclasses, every destination, the Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaigns, three raids, and the Prophecy dungeon.

The newer campaigns, the other raids and dungeons, Strand, and Prismatic need paid content.

Destiny 2: The Collection bundles all of it.

Is Destiny 2 still worth playing in 2026?

Yes.

The gunplay and movement are still strong, and most of the progression is available now.

You are no longer chasing seasonal content that rotates out.

Which class is best for beginners?

None is the best.

Hunter suits players who like movement and damage, Titan suits close-range fighters, and Warlock suits players who like abilities and support.

Pick the fantasy you enjoy, since all three can do every activity.

What should I buy first in Destiny 2?

Play the free content first.

If you want more, buy Destiny 2: The Collection on sale, since it bundles every expansion, pack, and dungeon key.

If you want only one campaign, make it The Final Shape.

What is the max power level in Destiny 2?

The cap is 550.

You start at 10, and loot drops at 300 or higher.

Around 440, regular drops stop helping, and pinnacle rewards from harder activities take you the rest of the way to 550.

Can you play Destiny 2 solo?

Yes.

Campaigns, destination activities, solo ops, and many quests work alone.

Raids and dungeons need a team, and Fireteam Finder helps you find one.

Do I need to play the New Light campaign?

No, but we recommend it if you’re brand new.

It’s short, and it teaches your abilities and weapons.

The game lets you skip the rest partway through.

What order should I play the Destiny 2 campaigns in?

Play them in release order: New Light, Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate, and Renegades.

The first two are free.

The story builds toward The Final Shape.

What happened to the Red War and Forsaken campaigns?

Bungie vaulted them, along with older destinations and raids, so you can’t play them now.

Bungie plans to restore them for all players, and its October 29 update named these campaigns as the first phase.

There is no release date, and Bungie’s estimate is no earlier than early 2028.

Does Destiny 2 have cross save and cross-platform play?

Cross save lets one Destiny account follow you across platforms.

Destiny 2 is available on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store.
